Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is an ambitious national initiative that is focused on combating climate change, improving quality of life, and protecting the environment for future generations.
Launched in 2021 by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, SGI is a whole-of-society initiative, uniting all sustainability efforts in the country to rapidly scale up the Kingdom’s climate action.
SGI supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2060 through the Circular Carbon Economy approach and is also accelerating the country’s transition to a green economy. Three overarching targets guide SGI’s work - emissions reduction, afforestation, and land and sea protection.
Since SGI’s inauguration, 77 initiatives corresponding to the three targets have been activated, representing an investment of more than $186bn and helping to drive sustainable growth. By bringing together the government and private sector, and fostering collaboration and innovation, the Kingdom’s commitments have been turned into tangible action, whilst supporting global goals.
Discover how the commitment to sustainability is central to Vision 2030.
Vision and Purpose
The SGI was created to:
-
Reduce Saudi Arabia’s environmental footprint.
-
Diversify the economy through renewable energy and green technologies.
-
Improve quality of life and protect natural ecosystems.
-
Lead the global energy transition from oil dependence to sustainability.
It represents a paradigm shift — moving from being one of the largest oil producers to a global hub for green innovation.
Key Targets (as of 2025 Goals)
The Saudi Green Initiative sets three main pillars and specific targets:
1. Protecting Land and Nature
-
Plant 10 billion trees across Saudi Arabia by 2060 — equivalent to restoring 40 million hectares of degraded land.
-
Increase protected areas to more than 30% of the Kingdom’s land (around 600,000 km²).
-
Preserve marine and coastal environments, reforest deserts, and combat desertification.
2. Reducing Carbon Emissions
-
Achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 through the Circular Carbon Economy model.
-
Reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tons per year by 2030.
-
Shift from fossil fuels to clean energy and carbon capture technologies.
3. Transitioning to Clean Energy
-
Generate 50% of Saudi Arabia’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
-
Develop large-scale solar and wind projects (NEOM, Al Shuaibah, Sakaka, Sudair, etc.).
-
Expand green hydrogen production — with NEOM’s Hydrogen Project set to be one of the world’s largest.
Key Initiatives and Projects under SGI
1. Green Hydrogen at NEOM
-
A $8.4 billion project producing 600 tons of green hydrogen daily.
-
Aims to make Saudi Arabia a global exporter of clean fuel.
2. Renewable Energy Projects
-
Dozens of solar farms and wind farms launched across the country.
-
Example: Sudair Solar Project (one of the largest in the world).
3. Mangrove Reforestation Program
-
Planting millions of mangroves along the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coasts to protect biodiversity and store carbon.
4. National Center for Vegetation Cover
-
Manages tree planting, land rehabilitation, and protection against desertification.
5. Carbon Capture and Utilization Technologies
-
Investing in carbon recycling and clean fuel research.
6. Sustainable Tourism and Smart Cities
-
Integration with NEOM, The Red Sea Project, and Amaala — ensuring tourism growth aligns with environmental goals.
Investment and Global Collaboration
-
Over 700 environmental initiatives have been launched under SGI since 2021.
-
Backed by tens of billions of dollars in government and private investments.
-
Partnerships with global organizations like:
-
UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
-
World Economic Forum (WEF)
-
Aramco, ACWA Power, and NEOM Energy for renewable innovations.
-
Governance & Monitoring
-
Managed by the Saudi Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and the Ministry of Investment (MISA).
-
Annual Saudi Green Initiative Forum brings together leaders and experts to track progress and announce new commitments.
Progress Updates (2021–2025)
-
800+ million trees planned or planted under early stages.
-
Carbon reduction projects ongoing in power and oil sectors.
-
Renewable energy capacity expanding rapidly — multiple solar and wind farms operational.
-
Saudi Arabia ranks among the top global investors in green hydrogen and renewable energy development.
Relationship with the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI)
-
While SGI focuses inside Saudi Arabia, the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) expands similar efforts across the region.
-
MGI’s goal: plant 50 billion trees across the Middle East and reduce carbon emissions by 60% regionally.
In Summary
| Focus Area | SGI Goals |
|---|---|
| Reforestation | 10 billion trees in Saudi Arabia |
| Renewable Energy | 50% clean power by 2030 |
| Carbon Reduction | 278 million tons CO₂ reduction per year |
| Net-Zero Goal | By 2060 |
| Protected Areas | 30% of national territory |
| Hydrogen Production | World’s largest green hydrogen hub in NEOM |
Conclusion
The Saudi Green Initiative is transforming the Kingdom into a leader of global sustainability.
It reflects Saudi Arabia’s long-term commitment to balance economic growth, energy diversification, and environmental preservation — turning the desert into a living example of a green, resilient, and innovative future.
